Fundamentals first (II)

Letter December 13, 2011
Our economic policymakers are foreign qualified and have no roots in the politics of local economics.

LAHORE: In drafting a policy for the betterment of the country, what about the perspective of the policy reviewers? The economic policy of an underdeveloped country cannot be formulated by reading or following the economic models of other developed countries. The problem with our nation is that all our economic policymakers are foreign qualified and have no roots in the politics of local economics. Hence, we stand a small chance of betterment for the near future.

Why aren’t books written based on extensive research on domestic economic problems? To my knowledge there are none, nor can there be any, since we do not encourage research and extensive academic work. As a result, our policies are adopted or borrowed and hence, don’t render the results we expect them to.
