PTA restriction on SMS words

Letter November 25, 2011
I hope that the prohibition will eventually be imposed by the PTA.

UNIVERSITY OF KARACHI: I was disappointed to read in your newspaper that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has, for the time being, deferred its proposed restriction on hundreds of English and Urdu words from being sent via text messages on mobile phones in the country. Yes, I agree this may violate free speech but, at the same time, such a ban could help prevent our younger generation from using inappropriate language. Increasingly, young people are leading unsupervised lives. Such a prohibition makes sense since their parents and elders seem to have abdicated their supervisory duties.

I hope that the prohibition will eventually be imposed by the PTA.
