Remembering Dr Abdus Salam (II)

Letter November 23, 2011
Religious extremists in Pakistan declare anyone who doesn’t agree with their views as an ‘infidel’.

KARACHI: Religious extremists in Pakistan can’t even tolerate liberal people so how can anyone expect these savages to treat atheists or agnostics as human beings? They declare anyone who doesn’t agree with their views as an ‘infidel’ and have no qualms about killing him here. That is precisely why there can be no expectation of civilised behaviour from the fanatics. The only language they understand is the language that they themselves use on those who do not share their rigid belief: unbridled force. That is why talking to, say, the Taliban in pursuit of peace will never bear any real results in Pakistan.
