Memogate: truth or fiction?

Letter November 18, 2011
It is Mansoor Ijaz who is insisting, or rather claiming, that Husain Haqqani, sent it.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to your story of November 18 titled “Memogate: truth or fiction?” The said controversy seems to be on the premise that then US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen has admitted to receiving the said memo. But how he got it is unclear. It is Mansoor Ijaz who is insisting, or rather claiming, that Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani, sent it. However, who knows what the truth is.

And, while I am not exactly a fan of any of our leaders, civilian or military, I find it hard to believe that Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington would have been foolish enough to write such a memo to a US military chief or to anybody else in the US administration. Furthermore, I also find it hard to believe that members of the US establishment could bring such pressure to bear on the Pakistani military, as outlined in the memo itself.
