ISLAMABAD: I don’t think people are really bothered by whether Imran Khan is a political sage or not, or whether he will make for a good statesman. But I do think that he is not corrupt and that counts for something in a country like Pakistan. He does not need power for the sake of power, and he does not want money. These are qualities that we want in a leader, so that he can guide the nation out of the dire straits that it is in.
Some people criticise Imran Khan, saying that he is naïve and not sophisticated enough. That too, even if true for the sake of argument, is immaterial because right now he is the best possible choice and people will vote for him. Take his Lahore rally, for instance. Thousands of people attended it and they did so knowing that there is always a law and order risk associated with attending such large gatherings. If the voter turnout increases from the last election, which was under 35 per cent to say 50 per cent or more, it could be that the PTI may win many more seats than most people think it can.
