Saving Pakistan Steel Mills

KARACHI: This is with reference to a quote in your newspaper by the federal minister for production, Anwar Ali Cheema, who has said that the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) is a liability and that the government should get rid of it instead of struggling to keep the loss-making entity going.

I am surprised that a federal minister should be saying such a thing, especially one under whose ministry this organisation comes. The government needs to ensure that the PSM is managed more efficiently, that the corruption that it is known for is eliminated and that its employees are hired only on the basis of merit and not nepotism or patronage. If that is done, I am sure the organisation’s financial fortunes can be turned around.
