The popular choice

Letter November 03, 2011
Imran Khan is trying to completely eradicate corruption in Pakistan but I think that is not the main problem.

LAHORE: This is with reference to Sami Shah’s article of November 3 titled “The popular choice”. I agree with what the writer is saying. Imran Khan is trying to completely eradicate corruption in Pakistan but I think that is not the main problem. Of course, I am not condoning corrupt practices but merely trying to point out that even in countries that have achieved much, there exists corruption, albeit at a much smaller level. However, what sets these nations apart is that things get done and governments are able to, by and large, fulfil their campaign pledges and promises.

So even as corruption exists in such societies, citizens generally follow the law, have confidence in it and in the government, and the quality of their lives improves with every passing year. Take the case of even India where one of its politicians, Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was often mired in allegations of corruption, managed to turn around Indian Railways when he was minister for railways.
