KARACHI: The country is preparing for another Eidul Azha. On this day, millions of Pakistanis will be sacrificing animals. However, may I request the various city district governments and municipal authorities, especially in my home town of Karachi, to ban the sacrificing of animals on streets?
Also, if I may point out, in many areas tents have sprung up outside apartment buildings and bungalows. There is about a week left before the animals are to be sacrificed so that means that for the duration of the following several days, those who live in these areas will be exposed to animal excrement and the flies and other insects that come with all of this. Why must people engage in this show by installing tents for their animals? Doesn’t the spirit of the day demand that we go about carrying out our religious duty in a manner that is humble and does not disturb the lives of others who live around us, especially our neighbours? Of course, expecting this to happen in today’s Pakistan, where display of religiosity and public piety is often seen as a barometer of how good one actually is as a person, is perhaps asking too much.
