The public and the PPP (II)

Letter October 29, 2011
The writer is perhaps making an understatement when she says that the country’s economic situation is far from rosy.

CHANTILLY, VA, US/ BALTIMORE, MD, US: Ms Jilani’s piece of October 29 on the travails of the PPP was very nicely done. That said, the writer is perhaps making in an understatement when she says that the country’s economic situation is far from rosy.

As for the suspension of members of parliament for not declaring their assets by the given deadline, that is perhaps a good thing because at least their names were made public. That would, at least in a normal society, shame all those whose names are published in newspapers.

The flaw in this process, however, is that there is no mechanism by which the veracity of the declarations of assets made by members of parliament can be verified.
