Failing English

Letter October 29, 2011
Training of our police officers is not very good as English is often used in official business in this country

ISLAMABAD: According to a newspaper report, more than 600 police officers who took part in an English language test conducted by the United Nations for selecting peacekeepers failed. A total of 1,213 applicants, including 120 women, drawn from the Federal Investigation Agency, motorway police and regular police of the four provinces ranking from head constable to superintendent appeared in the test held in Islamabad.

This clearly shows that the training of our police officers is not very good as English is often used in official business in this country, and certainly in government work. The section of the test that related to the listening of English and its comprehension, and another on report writing proved to be difficult for a majority of the applicants.
