Future of Afghanistan

Letter October 26, 2011
Pakistan needs to go into the Turkish and Bonn conference on Afghanistan with strategic vision of the future.

NEW YORK: This is with reference to Tariq Fatemi’s article titled, “Clinton in Islamabad” published on October 26. There are two conferences at which the future of Afghanistan is to be discussed. One is being hosted by Turkey in Istanbul on November 2. As a regional player, India will also have a seat at the table. The second high-level conference will take place in Bonn in December. These two conferences together could possibly shape the contours of a desired settlement (like the Dayton Accord of December 1995 did for Palestine). Pakistan should go into these meetings well prepared. The position it would take at these conferences should be discussed and crafted by well-meaning people who possess a strategic vision of the future; the dimwits, who have for six-plus decades run the foreign policy of the country should stay out of it.
