The notion of strategic depty (III)

Letter October 20, 2011
Despite the writer’s explanation on Pakistan, ‘strategic depth’, the narrative is simply not acceptable any more.

KARACHI: One can fool some of the people all of the time, or all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time. Despite the writer’s explanation on Pakistan’s experience with ‘strategic depth’, the narrative that the article tries to put forth is simply not acceptable any more to the rest of the sane world around us.

It is about time that our soldiers and their generals realised that the world around them has changed. A lot of water has flown under the bridge since the good old days when the world used to look to Afghanistan through the eyes of the Pakistani establishment.

The world and more importantly the Afghans today know exactly what we seek in Afghanistan and that what we seek will never be allowed to materialise. Pakistan may seek a pliant regime in Afghanistan but that is unlikely to happen given that the Afghans have never liked taking orders from anyone and give the current state of hostility towards Pakistan among many ordinary Afghans.
