Musharraf and the MQM

Letter October 16, 2011
The fact of the matter is that Pervez Musharraf has no constituency of his own.

KNOXVILLE, TN, US: This is with reference to your report of October 13 titled “MQM opens doors to Musharraf”. The fact of the matter is that Pervez Musharraf has no constituency of his own. The only way he can get into power is through a military coup or with the support of a political party. The MQM controls some constituencies and since Musharraf is himself a Muhajir, this can suit his objective. We should not forget that it was during Musharraf’s time that the MQM had a good relationship with the centre. And this may have been done so that in future, if Musharraf wanted to enter politics through parliament, he could be given a safe MQM seat. However, at most the former president may win a National Assembly seat from Karachi, but that does not mean that he can become prime minister or president again.
