Shrinking green spaces

Letter October 16, 2011
Lahore’s Canal Road is being widened to add another lane, but this has come at the cost of several trees being chopped

LAHORE: I travel on Lahore’s Canal Road quite frequently. Right now, there seems to be some work going on there and it is being done at break-neck speed, as if there is some very close deadline to be met. However, what is unfortunate to note is that the road is being widened to add another lane, but this has come at the cost of several dozen trees being chopped. The widening of roads is perhaps an unavoidable thing in this day and age with increasing numbers of vehicles and traffic, but it should be done in a manner so that residents of cities like Lahore don’t permanently lose their green spaces.
