Pakistani textbooks

Letter October 15, 2011
I see a positive change in the Pakistani intelligentsia in recent times despite what is going on inside the country.

NEW DELHI: This is with reference to Farhan Ahmed Shah’s article of October 15 titled “Why our textbooks need to include Ranjit Singh”.

I see a positive change in the Pakistani intelligentsia in recent times despite what is going on inside the country. If brothers part, they don’t change names of their parents. History is a bit like that. We may disagree on many issues and live as we like but we must not forget our past. It not only gives us the joy of living but also teaches us how to come out of crisis.

The shared history of Pakistan and India can also be an indicator of where their collective future lies. If we learn from our past, we can make our countries a better place for ourselves and our future generations. This also means resolving our bilateral differences and conflicts on our own, without any help from any outsider such as China and America. After all, we jointly fought off the colonial invader when we achieved our independence — so there’s no reason we can’t strike peace between ourselves now.
