Diplomats and the law

Letter October 05, 2011

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police have detained a diplomat for allegedly humiliating a police official after violating the law. The diplomat was shifted to the Margalla Police Station for further proceedings of the case. Later, police allowed the diplomat to leave after recording his statement.

The diplomat was intercepted by an official of the Islamabad traffic police when he parked his vehicle in a no-parking zone at the Immigration and Passport Office. He was asked to remove his vehicle from there but he refused and reportedly started arguing.

It is a good sign that the police took the diplomat to the police station and recorded his statement, knowing that he is a diplomat. I wonder what would have happened had a Pakistani diplomat done this in, say, Washington DC.
