Motives for America’s recent diatribes

Letter September 27, 2011
The conspiracy theory approach is quite familiar and is in fact now ingrained in the national psyche.

WASHINGTON DC: This is with reference to Air Marshal (retd) Shahzad Chaudhry’s article of September 27 titled “What could be the possible motives for America’s recent diatribes?”

The conspiracy theory approach is quite familiar and is in fact now ingrained in the national psyche. Without exonerating the US for its many follies and missteps it is most appropriate to question the role of the Pakistan military in bringing the country to a state of collapse and failure. The military did not perform well in each one of the wars it fought. It then played a shameful role in the killing of all democratic traditions in the country and also had a key role, through General Zia, in promoting extremism and intolerance in society.

It is time for the military and those who have served in it to look in the mirror. Pakistan today is a bankrupt country because of the huge amounts spent every year from the budget on defence. The sooner we realise this the better.
