Hares and hounds

Letter September 22, 2011
A weak and bankrupt state like Pakistan has little, if any, leverage to make such moves.

LAHORE: This is with reference to Tariq Fatemi’s article of September 22 titled “Disappointing though not surprising”. Pakistan must realise that it cannot run with the hare and hunt with the hounds. If the writer, who is presumably a seasoned veteran of Pakistan’s foreign policy establishment, does not understand the undercurrents of Saudi  Arabia’s animosity with Iran and with Pakistan’s efforts to flirt with both regimes, then that is most unfortunate. A weak and bankrupt state like Pakistan has little, if any, leverage to make such moves.
