Broadband surprise

Letter September 21, 2011
Ask PTCL or other ISPs about speed issue and he is likely to hear "consider yourself lucky you are getting 100kb/s."

KARACHI: This is with reference to Omair Zeeshan’s report of September 19 titled “PTCL broadband surprise: Unlimited package now with a price”.

First of all, bandwidth rates in Pakistan are not cheap. Most ISPs charge at least a thousand rupees for one MB connection, and that gives only a top speed of 100kb/second. Compare this to the UK or the US, where one can get a 25MB connection for as little as $30 a month with downloading speeds in the range of 14MB per second.

However, the situation in Pakistan is quite different. Here if one asks PTCL or any other ISP about this speed issue, he is likely to hear two things in response. The first is: “Oh sir, you should consider yourself lucky that you are even getting 100kb/s. Most of our other users don’t get anything more than 80.”

The second is that ISPs will tell you that issue is of kilobits and kilobytes and the connection speed is just right and that consumers have no basis for a complaint.
