Big Brother and your Gmail

Letter September 20, 2011
There are always circumstances which demand that government take steps to combat an immediate and present threat.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Jahanzaib Haque’s article of September 20 titled “Big Brother wants access to your Gmail account”.

There are always circumstances which demand that a government take extraordinary steps to combat an immediate and present threat. Even in America, the Patriot Act was introduced and sailed through Congress in record time. Take Britain, Israel or any other country which has faced terrorism and they have all instituted so-called “black” laws, which encroach on their citizen’s civil liberties. The point that the writer should have raised against such bans is that they don’t work.

The way I see it presently, Pakistan seems to be facing an international smear campaign wherein its entire population of some 180 million people is being painted as blood-thirsty savages bent on destroying the world. As for our leaders, unable to defend this country on any front, they are not trying to prevent us from seeing what the rest of the world thinks and believes about us.
