Fighting dengue outbreak

Letter September 19, 2011
Instead of making unrealistic claims, the Punjab govt should put in place a long-term plan to combat the disease.

RAWALPINDI: With reference to your editorial of September 19 titled “Mosquitoes in hospitals”, the team of Sri Lankan doctors told their counterparts in Lahore that it took nearly three decades for their country to control dengue fever. Therefore, instead of making unrealistic claims, the Punjab government should put in place a long-term plan to combat the disease. This should include a full-fledged public awareness campaign, so that every citizen can be educated about dengue fever and how it spreads.

Pathological tests for this disease must be ensured at a cheap price by the provincial government. In addition to that, medicines must also be made available. This awareness drive must be extended to the whole province, despite the fact that the disease, for now, seems to be concentrated in Lahore.
