Democracy — the only road to be on

Letter September 19, 2011
democracy will never take root in Pakistan as long as there is feudalism and tribalism.

KARACHI: This is with reference to Rasul Baksh Rais’s article of September 19 titled “Democracy — the only road to be on”.

Democracy will begin to take root in Pakistan when a majority of its people are educated and are aware of their basic rights. It will arise when people realise the power of their vote and as a result voter turnout in elections is reasonably high. Also democracy will never take root in Pakistan as long as there is feudalism and tribalism. Democracy can not flourish where a few hundred families have appropriated the bulk of the nation’s resources to themselves, while the rest of the population has to live in slums like slaves and animals. In India, they abolished these systems right after independence, and that is the reason democracy took strong roots there. I would request the writer to write a second part to this article where he provides solutions.
