Speaking Bengali in Dhaka (II)

Letter September 15, 2011
For a South Indian like myself, Hindi is an inferior language, especially given its short history.

MUMBAI: All I can say is that much of what Ms Malhotra is saying in her article on Bangladesh, suggests that she is a Hindi-speaking North Indian, who refuses to acknowledge, let alone learn, other cultures (namely South Indian).

For a South Indian like myself, Hindi is an inferior language, especially given its short history. Kannada and Tamil have both been around for much longer and besides Hindi does not have its own script. Furthermore, it borrows heavily from foreign languages such as Arabic and Persian.

So, I refuse to speak or even acknowledge knowing Hindi in public.
