Freedom to do as they wish

Letter August 22, 2011
Terrorist organisations are able to publicly raise funds, publish and distribute propaganda.

LONDON: This is with reference to Saroop Ijaz’s article of August 22 titled “Shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre”. The only people who truly enjoy freedom of speech in Pakistan are those individuals and groups who want to limit everyone else’s. Terrorist organisations are able to publicly raise funds, publish and distribute propaganda and distribute hate-filled publications and the Pakistani state does nothing to stop this.

This, despite a legal obligation on its part, since most these organisations have been banned under UN auspices. The state seems to have no problem respecting their freedom of speech.
