Descent into anarchy (II)

Letter August 20, 2011
They need to seriously ponder over the situation and call the army in aid of civil power.

KARACHI: The past few days have been among the bloodiest the city has seen in a number of years. Dozens of people have lost their lives and the government is doing nothing to catch the killers. The ironic thing is that almost every announcement by a senior government functionary that the violence will be curbed and those involved in it will be caught is followed by a bout of more murder and mayhem.

In any civilised country, if the situation were this bad, the concerned minister would, at the very least, resign. However, we have hardly ever see anyone in a position of authority and responsibility stand up and take responsibility in this manner so it’s unlikely that we are going to see anyone resign any time soon. There is still time and our insensitive leaders need to wake up. They need to seriously ponder over the situation and call the army in aid of civil power to get rid of the militant groups so that peace can be brought back to Karachi.
