Karachi’s war

Letter August 16, 2011
Does accommodation imply surrendering what is important? Should the soul of Karachi be lost to the changed dynamics?

PHOENIX, AZ, US: This is with reference to Shahid Javed Burki’s article of August 15 titled “Exploding Karachi”. I agree with the writer in that the key word is “accommodation”, be it political, economic or religious. But does accommodation imply surrendering what is important? Should the soul of Karachi be lost to the changed dynamics? Shall we all succumb to the tribal values that are seemingly being imposed on the city? Accommodation is certainly the ideal method in a civilised society where different ideas are mixed and the best suited are allowed to rise, sadly the same does not apply in this case where people are relying on guns and use of force.
