Adulterated milk

Adulterated milk

KARACHI:

Many families in Karachi rely heavily on milk for daily consumption, using it for tea, cooking and general nutrition. However, growing concerns persist regarding the purity of the milk available in the city.
According to a recent media report, 71 out of 127 milk samples tested in Karachi were found to be adulterated with water or harmful chemicals such as detergents, salt and sugar. While water is commonly added to increase volume and profit margins, detergents are used to create a frothy texture that makes watered-down milk appear thicker. Other chemical additives are introduced to artificially alter the appearance or prolong the shelf life of the product.
This widespread adulteration poses a severe threat to public health. Milk is consumed by people of all ages, but it is particularly vital for children. Diluting it drastically reduces its nutritional value, leading to stunted growth and malnutrition. Therefore, the Sindh Food Authority and local administration must conduct regular, stringent testing at dairy farms, during transit and at retail shops. Vendors found guilty of adding toxic substances must face severe legal penalties. Furthermore, the test results should be made public to empower consumers and raise awareness.
Milk must remain a source of vital nutrition rather than a hazard to public health. The residents of Karachi deserve access to safe, pure and high-quality milk.
