KARACHI:
University education should be about more than attending lectures, reading textbooks and passing exams. It should also prepare students for real-life situations and future careers. However, many students complete their degrees but still feel unsure about how to apply their knowledge in practical situations. A recent development in this regard is the Punjab Information Technology Board’s (PITB) partnership with the University of Lahore and the University of Sargodha under the Makerspace Punjab initiative. The initiative aims to provide students with access to specialised laboratories, technical guidance, training and facilities to develop their ideas into practical projects.
This is a positive step because students need more opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Books provide important knowledge, but practical experience helps students understand how to use that knowledge in everyday and professional life. It can also help them become more confident, creative and prepared for future challenges. Universities should arrange more practical workshops, internships, training sessions and activities related to different fields. These opportunities should be available to students from different academic backgrounds, so everyone gets a chance to develop useful skills.
Our education system should not just focus on producing graduates, it should also help students become capable individuals who can use their knowledge to make a positive contribution to society.
