Road indiscipline

KARACHI:

Traffic discipline and road safety in Islamabad during rush hours deserve urgent attention, as frequent accidents on main highways cause serious disruptions. According to an Islamabad Traffic Police report from September 3, 2026, more than 72,000 traffic violators were fined during the month of August alone. These violations primarily included illegal parking, speeding, lane violations and driving the wrong way.
Traffic rules are established to protect everyone from accidents and hazardous situations. However, the effectiveness of these laws depends equally on law enforcement authorities and citizens. Illegal parking, careless driving and road violations cause severe infrastructure damage and significantly increase the risk of both major and minor accidents. Furthermore, these behaviours trigger traffic congestion and unnecessary delays.
To resolve this, the relevant authorities must continue to enforce traffic laws strictly. They should also organise public campaigns in offices, public spaces and educational institutes to foster a culture of responsible driving. At the same time, citizens must recognise their civic responsibilities and play an equal part in improving traffic discipline. This includes strictly following traffic rules, wearing helmets while riding motorcycles and never speeding.
