Red Bus glitches

Red Bus glitches

Public transport is not just a necessity but a basic right, which should especially be available in an urban city like Karachi, the country’s largest metropolis. The People’s Bus Service (Red Bus) was launched in 2022 with promises to make commuting easier for citizens. However, management has failed to keep that promise due to reported issues such as bus shortages and frequent breakdowns caused by engine failure.
In a country like Pakistan where poverty is widespread, and in a densely populated city like Karachi, people have to commute daily while living hand-to-mouth. They depend heavily on cost-effective services like these. Unfortunately, the system is failing, and the Red Bus fleet has dwindled to only a limited number of operational vehicles. A recent report in September stated that many buses broke down due to engine failures caused by faulty diesel. Consequently, commuters face severe daily hardships, such as waiting at stops in intense heat and enduring heavily overcrowded buses.
To resolve this, the government must increase the number of buses, ensure weekly maintenance and enforce strict quality checks on fuel and oil.
