Skills development

KARACHI:

Pakistan’s youth possess immense potential to contribute to national development. However, in today’s changing job market, academic qualifications alone may not be sufficient. Young people also need practical skills, professional guidance and opportunities to apply their knowledge in the workplace.
The government’s partnership with Google, announced in August 2026, includes a target of providing 150,000 Google Career Certificates to Pakistani youth during 2026. This is an encouraging step towards preparing young people for a technology-driven economy. Nevertheless, training programmes should focus not only on completing courses but also on developing skills that employers actually require. AI, data analysis, cybersecurity and digital productivity tools can create new opportunities when combined with practical experience and responsible use of technology.
The relevant authorities, educational institutions and technology companies should work together to connect training with employment. Internship opportunities, hands-on projects, career counselling and mentorship should become important parts of these programmes. Equal attention should be given to students from less privileged backgrounds. Progress should also be assessed through practical skills gained and employment opportunities secured, rather than certificates alone.
By investing in practical learning and stronger industry partnerships, Pakistan can help its youth turn their abilities into productive careers and contribute to the country’s economic progress.
