Karachi power woes

Letter October 23, 2026
Karachi power woes

KARACHI:

For some people, a power cut means waiting a few minutes for the lights to return. For others, it means losing a day’s earnings, missing an important deadline or spending another sleepless night in the heat. In Karachi, frequent electricity interruptions are more than an inconvenience; they are a problem that affects people’s ability to work, study and carry on with their daily lives.
Small shopkeepers often struggle to keep their businesses running when electricity goes out during working hours. Customers may leave shops that become dark and uncomfortable, while workers who depend on sewing machines and computers are unable to complete their orders. Students face a similar problem when power cuts interrupt their study time, particularly during examinations. For families that cannot afford generators or UPS systems, the summer heat makes these interruptions even harder to bear.
What makes the situation more frustrating is the uncertainty. When people do not know when the electricity will return, they cannot plan their work or manage their time properly.
K-Electric should provide timely updates about planned outages and give residents clear information about unexpected interruptions. Faulty transformers and damaged cables should be repaired promptly, while complaints about repeated power cuts should be investigated. The relevant authorities should also regularly review outage records and ensure that electricity providers are held accountable for the quality of their service.
Reliable electricity is essential for education, small businesses, and everyday life. The people of Karachi should not have to keep adjusting their lives around an uncertain power supply. The authorities concerned should take practical steps to reduce unnecessary interruptions and provide residents with a service they can depend on.
