Baithak to social media

Baithak to social media

KARACHI:

Social media is a source of information, communication and entertainment, but it can also damage relationships, waste time and spread misinformation. Strong checks and balances are vital for the smooth functioning of society; otherwise, it can disrupt the entire social fabric.
In the past, entertainment took the form of dance performances, live singing, storytelling, gossip, games and skill-based competitions. Baithak culture was once in vogue. Later, radio and TV entered people’s lives as sources of storytelling, entertainment and information. They fostered togetherness, as families and neighbours sat together to listen to the radio and watch television dramas. Gradually, mobile phones and computers replaced many traditional activities and devices. Today, people remain connected, but the depth of love and affection has diminished considerably.
Moreover, while social media has made communication easier than ever, this unregulated accessibility has eroded the traditional boundaries of modesty and decency. Consequently, society has become more vulnerable to inappropriate behaviour, and the warmth and sincerity of human interaction have faded. Social media risks eroding societal morals and livability. It is, therefore, imperative for the government to implement concrete regulations and robust checks to ensure responsible social media usage. Beyond legislation, civil society, academic institutions, and communities must also step up to foster healthier digital habits.
