Helping patients make informed choices

Helping patients make informed choices

KARACHI:

The health care journey is often riddled with fear, anxiety, even anger. Whether seeking care for oneself or a loved one, the trepidation of the unknown is a near constant. The question is: how can health care organisations make this journey a little easier and a little less unclear?
While health care staff and operations have a big role to play, often this journey starts before any real human interaction. On the internet, the journey can be triggered by searching for the cause of a symptom or looking for the right specialist to manage a condition or looking into treatment options. The health care communicator has a crucial role to play here. Their job is to remove friction in this journey by creating transparency and respecting the need for clarity and easy-to-understand, cohesive information that can support informed decision making.
A hospital’s website is an important gateway in that journey and is often one of the first ways patients and families experience health care, either directly, or through the content on it that shapes what patients discover through search engines and AI. These websites, when structured smartly, with easy, intuitive navigation and relevant, thoughtfully created content, can make the difference between an informed journey and a pothole-riddled road to the doctor’s clinic.
This is what the AKUH’s revamped website aims to achieve, and the responsibility it tries to fulfil for its patients. It has been structured to act as a living organism, responding to patients’ needs with tools that help them look up doctors by expertise, location and qualifications; search smartly across diseases, treatments and education materials; and find information to help them navigate through the complexities of care.
Ultimately, a hospital’s website is more than a source of information. It is an opportunity to help patients make informed decisions as they seek care. If through introducing these features and enhancements we make our patients’ care journey even slightly easier, this will be a goal well achieved.
