KARACHI:
Every road accident that claims a life or leaves someone injured is a reminder that road safety requires continuous attention. In Balochistan, long distances, difficult terrain, road conditions, vehicle standards and unsafe driving practices can combine to create serious risks for road users.
Underage driving is another important concern. Children and teenagers who operate vehicles without the required licence, training or experience may place themselves and other road users at risk. Such incidents should be investigated carefully, and the facts of individual accidents should be established before responsibility is assigned.
Road safety requires more than blaming drivers. Roads need proper signage, lane markings, barriers where necessary, lighting in populated areas and regular maintenance. Vehicles should also meet safety requirements, while drivers need appropriate training and valid licences.
The authorities should strengthen enforcement of driving-age and licensing laws, particularly around schools and residential areas. Parents and guardians also have an important responsibility to ensure that children are not permitted to drive vehicles before reaching the legally required age.
Schools can contribute by teaching students basic road-safety rules, including safe pedestrian behaviour and the dangers of underage driving. Public-awareness campaigns can further reinforce these messages.
Emergency response is equally important. Ambulance services and trauma facilities should be available along major routes so that injured people can receive medical assistance as quickly as possible.
Road deaths are not inevitable. Better infrastructure, responsible driving, effective enforcement and rapid emergency response can collectively reduce the risks faced by road users.
