A voice for the voiceless

Letter October 14, 2026
A voice for the voiceless

KARACHI:

Every child deserves to grow up in a world where they feel safe, protected and respected. Childhood should be a time of learning, playing, dreaming and discovering the world — not a time of fear, trauma or silence. Yet, many children face abuse and violence, and often their voices remain unheard.
Children may not always have the courage, understanding or opportunity to speak about what they have experienced. Sometimes, fear keeps them silent. Sometimes, they worry that no one will believe them. This is why adults have a responsibility to notice the signs, listen carefully and create an environment where children feel safe enough to speak.
Protecting children is not only the responsibility of parents or teachers. It is a responsibility shared by families, schools, communities and society as a whole. We must teach children about personal boundaries, encourage them to speak up and make sure they know that abuse is never their fault.
Most importantly, we must stop ignoring uncomfortable conversations. Silence can protect the wrong person, while speaking up can protect a child.
Every child deserves to be heard. Every child deserves justice. And every child deserves a childhood free from fear. When a child cannot find their voice, we must become their voice.
