Thar and locals

Thar and locals

KARACHI:

Despite Thar’s vast coal resources and large-scale mining projects, local communities face challenges in turning these resources into sustainable business opportunities and long-term economic prosperity.
Thar coal has the potential to strengthen Pakistan’s energy security and transform the local economy. However, its success should not be measured solely by coal production and electricity generation, but also by the opportunities it creates for indigenous communities.
Although mining projects have generated employment, local entrepreneurs still face barriers such as limited financing, technical skills and difficulties meeting corporate procurement requirements. Consequently, many struggle to secure contracts for transportation, catering, maintenance and other supporting services.
To address these challenges, mining companies and the Sindh government should introduce local procurement targets, establish training programmes for small businesses and improve access to business financing. Thar’s true economic success will depend not only on the energy it produces, but also on the sustainable businesses and livelihoods it creates for its people.
