KARACHI:
Apropos an article published in these pages titled “Everyone is Happy Online, I’m Suspicious”. The writer, Yumna Zahid Ali, rightly points out the fake veil created by social media. Everyone is actively hiding the daily sorrows of life. No one is willing to share negative or unpleasant events. Our posts are largely driven by external validation; we post what we believe will be appreciated and share what is popular among others. Expecting reality on social media is like asking the jellyfish to show spine. This in turn has made the virtual world unauthentic and fake. Among other reasons, this behaviour is a leading cause of depression in youth. Tolerance is decreasing, morality and truth seem to be an outdated term. While we don’t need to post all our sorrows on social media, we can begin by being more real and authentic, to the society and ourselves.
