Every day, I stop at a petroleum station near 26 Number Chungi in Rawalpindi to offer prayers. Recently, I observed something that deeply moved me and sparked a profound reflection on ethics and work culture in our society.
I noticed a windshield cleaner working diligently at the station. In a society where low-income jobs are often overlooked and undervalued, this man stood out for his exceptional integrity and commitment. He approached every single car with immense respect, seeking permission from the drivers before starting his work. Whether it was an old Suzuki Mehran or a high-end Sportage, he treated every vehicle and every individual with equal attention and care. Running from one car to another under the open sky, his primary concern was clearly to ensure that every rupee he earned was completely halal. I noticed that not a single driver offered him a tip, yet his enthusiasm and passion never wavered.
This stood in stark contrast to what many of us observe in corporate or white-collar environments, where individuals holding advanced degrees often seek loopholes to shirk responsibility. This hardworking man demonstrated that true character is defined not by degrees, titles or social standing, but by sincerity, dignity of labour and dedication to one’s duties. If Pakistan is to progress, it will be built on the shoulders of individuals like him; people who take pride in their work regardless of the paycheck. His dignity is a reminder to us all that genuine change begins not with power, but with personal integrity.
