Human decency

Letter September 17, 2026
Human decency

KARACHI:

I often wonder why simple acts of kindness and respect have become so easy to overlook. Helping someone in need, treating others with dignity, respecting public spaces, and showing consideration are basic examples of human decency. Yet, in our busy lives, people can sometimes become indifferent to the difficulties of those around them. This lack of empathy can affect not only individuals but also the wider community. When people ignore someone’s struggles or behave without consideration, others may begin to see such behaviour as normal. On the other hand, even a small act of kindness can encourage others to behave more positively and create a healthier social environment.
I believe human decency does not require wealth, education or authority. It begins with understanding that our actions affect the people around us. Showing empathy, offering help and treating everyone with basic respect can make a meaningful difference. For Pakistan, where social pressures and everyday challenges can sometimes make people less considerate toward one another, promoting kindness and personal responsibility is especially important. A better society can begin with something as simple as caring about how our actions affect others.
