It is an enduring law of governance that the more you depend on external sources for help and support, the more your own institutions become atrophied, dysfunctional and incapable of standing on their own feet. Sindh government’s perennial ratification of the continued deployment of Rangers is a case in point.
Sindh Police is the primary institution responsible for law and order, apprehension of criminals, recovering illegal arms and preventing street crime. Sadly, the performance of Sindh Police has declined with each passing year, as it increasingly falls back on another organisation for support in every real or imaginary difficult situation. Most foreign embassies today seek protection from Rangers, rather than the Police. Needless to say the extensive involvement of Rangers in public and street situations has also had a negative impact on the Rangers.
Could I humbly request that the Sindh Police be de-politicised and transformed into a world-class professional body capable of handling all its mandated tasks, with competence and efficiency – on its own.
