Registering newborn babies is essential because it establishes a child’s official identity and permanently records their birth. Unfortunately, many families in Pakistan still neglect this simple yet crucial process. This formal registration not only grants a child legal recognition but also provides a birth certificate — an indispensable document required throughout their entire life.
According to UNICEF, around 166 million children under five worldwide have never had their births registered, meaning approximately one in four young children lack a legal identity. In Pakistan, the situation is particularly critical, with only about 34% of children under five being officially registered.
A major barrier is that many parents do not realise the immense importance of birth registration. However, without a birth certificate, children face severe obstacles when trying to enrol in school, access healthcare or receive government services. This lack of legal documentation creates significant hurdles that can persist well into adulthood.
To solve this crisis, the government must set up registration centres in rural villages and streamline the process at hospitals and local offices. Simultaneously, raising community awareness is vital so parents understand that a simple registration secures their child’s legal identity and ensures a safer, brighter future.
