Redefining wealth

Redefining wealth

KARACHI:

In a society increasingly consumed by financial anxiety and material success, our definition of “sustenance” has become dangerously narrow. We measure our well-being largely through bank balances, career titles and physical assets, often overlooking the non-material things that sustain us. Peace of mind, time, trust and a sense of community can be just as important to a fulfilling life.
Traditional spiritual wisdom teaches that true provision, or rizq, encompasses far more than material resources. It can also be found in the human encounters that shape our daily lives. The kindness of a stranger or the patience shown by a colleague can carry a value that cannot easily be measured in financial terms. Even difficult interactions can test our character and remind us of the importance of how we treat others. In the same way, generosity does not have to be monetary. Responding to a harsh comment with restraint, offering genuine care or simply treating another person with kindness can have an impact far beyond the moment itself.
If we begin to view our everyday interactions as part of our shared wealth, perhaps we can reduce some of the cynicism and friction that increasingly characterise public life. Material security is undoubtedly important, particularly at a time when many families face financial pressure, but it should not become the only measure of a prosperous life.
