KARACHI:
I wish to draw the attention of the authorities, healthcare organisations and fellow citizens to the grave challenges faced by Thalassemia patients and their families. Thalassemia is a chronic, inherited blood disorder that requires regular, often life-saving, blood transfusions every few weeks for survival.
Beyond the physical toll, coping with this condition imposes an immense emotional and financial burden on families, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds who struggle to afford recurring medical expenses, chelation therapy and safe blood units.
While medical advancements and dedicated non-profit organisations have made significant strides, much more needs to be done. To address this crisis effectively, there is an urgent need to promote voluntary blood donation through regular community camps to prevent critical blood shortages at treatment centers. Furthermore, encouraging pre-marital and antenatal screening can drastically reduce the incidence of Thalassemia major in future generations by spreading essential awareness about genetic testing. Enhancing government support by expanding subsidised treatment facilities and ensuring a steady, affordable supply of safe blood at public hospitals will also provide immense relief to struggling families.
Let us unite as a community to extend our compassion, spread vital awareness and save the lives of these innocent children and young adults who fight bravely against this condition every single day.
