The unbridled growth of “dark stores” and lightning-fast delivery services in Lahore constitute a growing urban safety risk. Although quick-commerce platforms provide consumers with previously unheard-of levels of convenience, their underlying business models depend on impractical fulfillment timelines that significantly jeopardise public safety on our city streets.
Courier riders often speed through residential streets, violate traffic lights and ride bikes while distracted by GPS apps in order to make strict delivery windows. Additionally, the conversion of residential homes into micro-fulfillment dark storefronts creates ongoing noise pollution in quiet neighborhoods, illegally occupies walkways with parked delivery fleets, and produces localised congestion.
The Lahore Development Authority and traffic police must enact proactive municipal regulations to address this problem before deadly collisions compel action. First, commercial dark establishments need to be confined to specific commercial areas where delivery vehicles are required to park off-street. Second, regulatory agencies ought to require delivery platforms to do away with rigid, minute-based speed incentives, making businesses jointly accountable for traffic infractions committed by riders under unreasonable time constraints. Instead of turning residential streets into dangerous transit zones, modernising urban services should improve city living.
