KARACHI:
Once, Pakistan’s hockey stick was a symbol of pride, but today it is struggling to find its place again. Pakistan’s performance in sports has gradually declined, and hockey has suffered badly. The national team has missed the last three Olympic Games.
According to World Cup data, Pakistan lost 4-1 to England, drew 3-3 with Wales and lost 5-3 to India. Meanwhile, India has improved through greater investment in hockey and the growth of the Hockey India League. After missing the 2008 Beijing Olympics, India has now started taking steps towards reform by appointing new leadership and a coach and by connecting school-level hockey with higher levels.
To sum it up, Pakistan can make hockey strong again by supporting young players and improving training facilities. Our youth is talented in sports, but it lacks opportunities, encouragement and proper training. If young players are given the right support, Pakistan can bring its hockey glory back.
