Environment awareness

KARACHI:

The growing lack of civic sense and environmental responsibility among our youth is a matter of serious concern. Despite repeated campaigns, littering, cutting of trees and disregard for public property remain common eyesores in our cities and towns.
As someone associated with the Boy Scout movement, I firmly believe that character-building institutions can play a vital role in addressing this challenge. Scouting teaches discipline, cleanliness, respect for nature and service to the community from an early age.
The government and educational institutions should make participation in Scouting, Girl Guides or similar character-building programmes compulsory. Regular tree plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns and community service activities should be made part of the academic calendar. Teachers and parents should also encourage children to take pride in keeping their surroundings clean.
If we invest in building responsible citizens today, we will secure a better Pakistan tomorrow.
