The recently introduced features of Pakistan’s National Identity Card are a commendable step by NADRA towards improving the security and reliability of the country’s identity system. The redesigned card includes several modern security features, including a citizen’s photograph encoded in a QR code, a monochrome laser-etched photograph and markers visible under ultraviolet light. These measures can help prevent forgery and identity theft while reducing the misuse of identity documents. They also represent an important effort to keep the country’s identification system in line with modern technological standards.
Such features can also make it easier to identify citizens who require special consideration and reflect a more citizen-oriented approach to public services. However, technological improvements must be accompanied by strong safeguards for personal information. NADRA and other relevant institutions should ensure that biometric and other personal data remain secure and are accessed only for legitimate purposes. Citizens should also have clear information about the safeguards in place and the procedures available if their information is misused.
Public awareness campaigns should explain the new features so that citizens can distinguish genuine identity cards from counterfeit ones and understand how their personal information is protected. This is particularly important as more government services become linked to digital identity systems. A modern identity card is an important part of national security and digital governance. I hope that we continue to strengthen the system while giving equal attention to protecting citizens’ privacy and rights.
