Reading is often described as the foundation of an educated society, yet public libraries across Pakistan continue to receive little attention. Many have outdated book collections and inadequate facilities. Some have quietly fallen into disuse because they have not been maintained for years. This is unfortunate because libraries remain one of the few public spaces where knowledge is available to everyone without financial barriers.
For many students, especially those from low-income households, purchasing books or subscribing to online academic resources is simply not possible. A well-equipped library can provide opportunities that would otherwise remain out of reach. It can also offer a quiet environment for study — something that many students struggle to find at home. Reviving public libraries should not be viewed as an unnecessary expense. Modest investments in updating books and introducing internet facilities would make these institutions far more useful. Partnerships with universities and publishers could further strengthen their collections without placing the full burden on the public purse.
Encouraging people to read requires sustained support for institutions that promote learning throughout the year. Public libraries may no longer dominate public discussion, but they still have an important role to play in building an informed and thoughtful society.
