Every monsoon season, heavy rainfall leaves roads submerged, disrupts traffic, damages property, and creates serious difficulties for citizens. It’s true that the climate change phenomenon has increased the intensity of rainfall, but poor drainage systems, blocked sewerage lines and unplanned urban development make the situation much worse. Many people struggle to reach schools, universities and workplaces, while standing water also increases the risk of diseases. Unfortunately, these problems continue to occur every year despite repeated warnings.
The government should prioritise improving drainage infrastructure, ensuring regular cleaning of drains and enforcing proper waste disposal to prevent blockages. Public awareness campaigns can also encourage citizens to keep their surroundings clean. This important issue deserves urgent attention of the authorities so that practical measures could be taken before the next rainy season.
